Egyptian Tales Galore Essay - 1525 Words
When Cleopatra came out in 1963, it was running on the budget of $44 million ($297 in 2007 dollars). The movie follows Cleopatra VII, last queen and monarch of Ancient Egypt from 48 BCE (allying with Caesar) to her suicide in 31 BCE. Cleopatra was born in 69 BCE to Ptolemy XII and an unknown mother and she would later inherit the throne along with her brother Ptolemy XIII when her father died in 51 BCE. Her brother had gotten Cleopatra to leave Egypt the same Caesar came chasing his rival Pompey into Egypt. They crossed paths and became allies against Ptolemy XIII, getting Cleopatraââ¬â¢s power as the sole queen back along with a son, Caesarion. After Caesarââ¬â¢s assassination in 44 BCE, Cleopatra was brought back to Rome 3 years later and had anâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Womenââ¬â¢s clothing showed very little skin, the opposite shown in the film, ââ¬Å"The female extras complained about their overly tight and revealing costumes,â⬠(anothermag.com). (i) In many H ollywood dramas, there is always some sort of slip when it comes to designing the costumes needed for the characters in a movie but Cleopatra went over the top. (ii) Cleopatraââ¬â¢s designers, ââ¬Å"placed emphasis on the actressââ¬â¢ beauty and sexuality over historical accuracyâ⬠(anothermag.com) (iii) The gowns Elizabeth Taylor wore were designed by Renie Conley, who won an Academy Award for her efforts but the Academy doesnââ¬â¢t measure accuracy. Ancient Egyptian clothing for women was very conservative and costumes in the film, especially the gowns, donââ¬â¢t reflect that. (i) More inaccuracies are shown by what became popularized because of the film, especially maxi dresses. Elizabeth Taylor was shown to be wearing maxi dresses throughout the film, which isnââ¬â¢t accurate at all. (ii) ââ¬Å"Most people think of the maxi dress as a ââ¬Ë70s trend but in fact it was first seen in the ââ¬Ë60s. Oscar de la Renta is credited with creating the very first maxi,â⬠(www.wish.com.au/maxi-dress/). (iii) Maxi dresses first came around in the 60ââ¬â¢s, more than 2000 years after Cleopatraââ¬â¢s reign. Facebook s Influence On Facebook Essay Example For Students
Facebook s Influence On Facebook Essay I remember when my cousin introduced me to Myspace. I became obsessed with this website because it allowed me to find all of my friends from school. I could look at their pictures, their favorite song, which of their ââ¬Å"top 10â⬠friends were, and I could also message them. To me this was the most wonderful thing I had ever seen. I would pray I could get home sooner just to log on and see if I had missed any important post or if I had any new messages from friends. It was until a friend introduced me to Facebook that I realized Myspace wasnââ¬â¢t as great as I thought it was. It became my new fascination because I was in love with the idea of looking at my friends various interests, like their favorite movies, books, colors, authors, etc. Facebook allowed your profile to be a lot more personal. I found out things about my best friends that I didnââ¬â¢t even know until I saw their profile on Facebook and at times I doubted if I really knew them. There were days that I would find myself on Facebook for hours, lurking from profile to profile and judging people from their status and wall posts. By the age of 19 I had about 1,000 ââ¬Å"friendsâ⬠on Facebook, but I only spoke to about 50 or so. I knew a lot of those friends I had but I would never speak to them outside of the comfort of Facebook. At one point, I had strangers sending me messages and asking how I knew them and why I had added them. Most if the time I had no idea of how or why I had requested to be their friends, yet I still managed to have a conversation with them. I found myself talking to my friends more on Facebook than at school. Socializing was made easier through Facebook and we saw this as a good thing, but in reality it just made us more uncomfortable when it came to having a con. . tion. We donââ¬â¢t have to post everything we do through out the day. We donââ¬â¢t have to share our feelings to the world only to get hurt by them. This way of life isnââ¬â¢t satisfying. We are not meant to communicate through any kinds of screens. We have a voice for a reason and lately we donââ¬â¢t use it. Weââ¬â¢re afraid of being judged for the sound that our mouth makes when we speak. Weââ¬â¢re afraid of saying the wrong things, which is why we type and re-read what we typed at least 10 times before we hit send. We are becoming into ââ¬Å"over thinkersâ⬠. But we forget the old saying, ââ¬Å"Over thinkers get depressed.â⬠I live this quote every day. I voice my opinion even if I get judged. I also tweet and post my opinion, and I like to talk about my feelings on Twitter all the time. Nothing beats a face to face conversation with my best friend though. FaceTime will never be able to replace her.
